Mathews County, located on the eastern tip of Virginia’s Middle Peninsula on the western shore of the Chesapeake Bay, has a rich history going back to the early 17th century. The county is named after Thomas Mathews (1742–1812), an American Revolutionary War general and Virginia politician, who represented Norfolk Borough in the Virginia House of Delegates, and served as that body's Speaker from 1782 until 1793.
